Polysilicon Production Wastewater Treatment: Trichlorosilane, Hydrofluoric Acid and High Salinity
Solar-grade polysilicon is made by reducing trichlorosilane in a chemical vapour deposition reactor, and the supporting chemistry produces some of the most aggressive water in the electronics supply chain. Silicon tetrachloride, hydrogen chloride and hydrofluoric acid all appear in the process water, and the dissolved solids load is high enough that discharge consent is hard to win. The realistic design target for most polysilicon plants is zero liquid discharge, because the salt, the fluoride and the chloride together make a once-through discharge expensive and the recovered water valuable.
A Circuit of Chlorine and Fluorine
Trichlorosilane is the feed, and its hydrolysis and the off-gas scrubbing produce hydrogen chloride and traces of silicon tetrachloride in the water. The chloride load is relentless and it does not precipitate.
Hydrofluoric acid enters where the silicon is cleaned or where fluoride-containing intermediates are handled, and fluoride is the constituent that decides the materials specification. It attacks glass, concrete and ordinary stainless steel, so the treatment circuit is specified for it from the start. The same selection criteria reappear in Gelatin and Collagen Production effluent, which is worth opening alongside this one.
The streams are not equal. A reactor scrubber stream is different in strength from a cleaning rinse, and a plant that combines them all into one stream has built a larger, saltier treatment problem than it needs.

Fluoride is removed by calcium precipitation to its solubility floor, and the sludge is a calcium fluoride residue that carries part of the metal inventory from the process.
Because fluoride governs corrosion, the precipitation and separation equipment is built from fluoropolymer-lined or suitably alloyed materials rather than adapted later, and that choice protects both the treatment train and the rest of the plant.

A plant that treats fluoride as a polishing step rather than a design constraint finds the cost surfacing as equipment failure two or three years in.
Why Zero Liquid Discharge
The combined load is chloride, fluoride and dissolved silicon species at concentrations that make a discharge consent difficult and a salt-recovery circuit attractive. Membrane concentration followed by evaporation separates the water from the salts.
The distillate returns to the process, which is the economic argument, and the solids are a salt cake for disposal rather than a liquid discharge.

The capital is high, but so is the cost of discharging a high-chloride, high-fluoride stream, and the recovered water has a direct value on a plant that uses ultrapure water in quantity.
Metals and Purity
Trace metals from the feed and the catalyst circuit report to the water and are concentrated through the evaporation step, so the residue classification is a permitting matter as much as an engineering one.

Where the plant recovers metals, the final filtrate is a salt stream rather than a metal stream, and it is treated as a salinity problem rather than a toxicity one. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Antibiotic Fermentation effluent covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.
Reference Data from 42 Commissioned Plants
Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.
That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.
| Metric | Measured value |
|---|---|
| Plants with complete COD records | 42 |
| Influent COD range | 200 – 172,000 mg/L |
| Treated COD range | 50 – 5,000 mg/L |
| Average influent COD | 11,914 mg/L |
| Average treated COD | 264 mg/L |
| Average COD removal | 87.1% |
| Wastewater types covered | 30+ |
| Delivery period on record | 2021–2022 |
Good characterisation of the feed decides both the materials and the residue handling before a line is built.
Operating Notes
Keep the streams separated at source. A dilute combined flow costs far more to evaporate than a small concentrated one.

Treat fluoride as a design constraint, not a polish. It sets the materials and it sets the sludge classification.
Finally, commit to zero liquid discharge or discharge early. The two targets produce different plants and the decision is expensive to reverse.
Where This Fits in the Wider Plant
If your site also runs this kind of duty, Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Electrolyte Wastewater Treatment covers the cost side of the decision in more depth. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.
Own Factory, Real Capacity
Tanks, skids, control panels and membrane housings are built in our own Guangdong facility. Nothing critical is subcontracted, which is why we can commit to delivery dates and hold quality across a batch instead of hoping the shop floor gets it right.
20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries
Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.
Complete System Responsibility
One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.
After the Handover
Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.
Twenty-Plus Export Markets
We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?
Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Polysilicon Production Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.
What information do you need to quote?
Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.
How do you handle sludge from this process?
Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.
