Petrol Station UST Remediation: BTEX, MTBE and Groundwater Recovery

When an underground storage tank at a petrol station fails, the release goes down before it goes anywhere else. Petrol is lighter than water and floats on the water table as a separate phase, dissolving benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene — BTEX — and the oxygenate MTBE into the groundwater as it spreads. The treatment is groundwater remediation, not sewage treatment, and the goals are different: recover the free product, strip the dissolved phase, and stop the plume before it reaches a water supply. This is environmental cleanup with a hard deadline set by the aquifer.

Free Product First

Petrol released underground forms a light non-aqueous phase liquid that floats on the water table. Until that free product is recovered, it keeps dissolving contaminants into the groundwater indefinitely.

Dual-phase recovery wells pull both the floating petrol and the underlying water, separating them at the surface. This is the first move and the highest-apply one; leaving free product in place guarantees a growing plume.

The free product is recovered as fuel, often returned to refining or disposed of as hazardous waste depending on quality. Either way it leaves the site rather than staying in the aquifer.

Monitoring wells around the release define the plume. You cannot treat what you have not mapped, and the map decides where the recovery wells go.

BTEX in the Dissolved Phase

Benzene is the one to worry about — it is the carcinogenic fraction of BTEX and the one with the lowest regulatory limit. Toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene are less acute but still drive the treatment design.

BTEX is volatile and biodegradable, which gives two routes. Air stripping pulls it out of the water as vapour; bioremediation breaks it down in situ or in a reactor. Often both are used in sequence.

Benzene is the constraint. A treatment train that removes toluene and xylene easily can still leave benzene above limit, so the design is set by benzene, not by the bulk BTEX.

Do not let the stripped vapour become a new problem. Air stripping transfers BTEX to air, which then needs treatment — usually activated carbon — rather than release.

MTBE Is the Stubborn One

Methyl tertiary-butyl ether was added to petrol as an oxygenate and turned out to be a remediation headache. It is highly soluble, persists in groundwater, and resists the biological treatment that handles BTEX.

What Our Project Data Actually Shows

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Because it dissolves readily and moves with the water, MTBE often travels ahead of the BTEX plume, leading the contamination into previously clean aquifer. Catching it early matters more than for the aromatics.

Air stripping removes MTBE poorly compared with BTEX, and ordinary biodegradation is slow. Granular activated carbon or advanced oxidation is usually needed, which is more expensive than the BTEX treatment.

Where MTBE is present, size the carbon system for it specifically. A train designed only for BTEX underperforms badly once MTBE dominates the plume.

Pump-and-Treat and Natural Attenuation

Pump-and-treat extracts groundwater, cleans it above ground — typically air stripping plus granular activated carbon — and returns or discharges it. It is reliable and well understood, but slow and energy-hungry. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Nitro Compounds, Red Water and Sulphate covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Monitored natural attenuation relies on the aquifer’s own biodegradation, with monitoring to prove the plume is shrinking. It is cheap but only acceptable where the geology and the limits allow it, and regulators want evidence.

Most sites use a hybrid: aggressive recovery at the source, natural attenuation verified by monitoring further out. The mix is set by plume size, aquifer speed and how close the supply wells are.

Granular activated carbon is the workhorse polish. It captures both BTEX and MTBE that stripping misses, and its consumption is the operating cost that defines the project budget.

Operating Notes

Recover free product before treating dissolved phase. A well still contacting free petrol never reaches a stable cleanup. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Silicone and Siloxane Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment system covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Design the train for benzene and MTBE, not for total BTEX. Those two set the limit and the cost.

Finally, map the plume with monitoring wells and keep mapping. Treatment you cannot verify is treatment a regulator will not accept.

Where This Fits in the Wider Plant

We have written about the downstream implications separately in styrene and eps manufacturing wastewater treatment. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

We Engineer the Whole Train

Screening, equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, membranes, evaporation, brine handling — the complete line comes from one organisation. Process design, mechanical, electrical and PLC programming sit under the same roof, so there is no gap for finger-pointing at handover.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

What happens if the incoming petrol station underground load exceeds the design figure?

Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Petrol Station UST Remediation rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.
