Oil Shale Retorting Wastewater: Phenolic Compounds, Ammonia and Oily Water

Retorting oil shale produces a wastewater with a composition close to coke plant liquor — high phenols, high ammonia, sulphide and oil, plus a refractory organic fraction that no single treatment stage removes. It is one of the more difficult streams in the energy sector, and the plants that handle it successfully all do the same thing: recover phenol and ammonia first, then treat what is left.

What Retort Water Contains

Shale is heated in the absence of air, driving off oil, gas and water. Condensing that vapour gives shale oil, which is separated, and an aqueous phase that has been in intimate contact with the pyrolysis products.

That water carries phenols — often one to five thousand milligrams per litre — along with ammonia at similar concentrations, sulphide, thiocyanate, organic acids and a dispersed oil fraction. COD commonly sits between twenty and sixty thousand.

The composition is genuinely similar to coal carbonising liquor, and the treatment logic that works for coke plants largely transfers. That is useful, because there is a great deal of operating experience to draw on.

Phenols are biocidal at these concentrations, so biological treatment without prior removal simply does not work. Solvent extraction is the standard route and should be regarded as recovery rather than pretreatment.

Recovered crude phenols have commercial value. Where the plant is large enough to justify the extraction unit, dephenolisation often pays for itself on recovered product before the effluent benefit is counted.

Steam stripping removes the volatile phenol fraction as well, and it is usually run in combination with ammonia removal rather than separately. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Metal Pickling Line Wastewater Treatment system.

Ammonia and Sulphide

Ammonia at several thousand milligrams per litre must be stripped, not nitrified. pH elevation followed by steam or air stripping in a packed tower is standard, and recovery as ammonium sulphate is often worthwhile. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Surfactant and Emulsion Breaking.

Sulphide should be removed in the same sequence, since it is stripped alongside ammonia at low pH or oxidised separately. Leaving it in creates odour problems and interferes with biological treatment downstream.

Where sulphate is also high — which it often is with shale — expect the familiar competition between sulphate-reducing bacteria and methanogens in any anaerobic stage, and plan biogas treatment accordingly.

Oil Separation

Dispersed and emulsified oil in retort water is persistent. Gravity separation removes the free fraction, and dissolved air flotation with coagulation handles the rest.

Reference Data from Our Own Projects

We commissioned a 6 m³/day plant for this duty in Wenshui, Shanxi back in 2021. Feed COD came in around 172,000 mg/L and left at 5,000 mg/L — 97.1% removal. The train was hydrolysis acidification + DAF + oil separation + ultrafiltration.

Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.

Do this before any biological or stripping stage. Oil coats packing, fouls heat exchangers and poisons biomass, and one upstream separator is worth more than any downstream fix. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Sugar Refinery and Starch Processing Wastewater Treatment system.

Recovered oil returns to the product stream, which is a small but real credit.

Refractory Organics and Realistic Targets

After dephenolisation and stripping, anaerobic treatment removes the bulk of the remaining COD well, and aerobic polishing with nitrification-denitrification handles the residual nitrogen.

What remains is a refractory fraction — heterocyclic and aromatic compounds — that gives a persistent COD residue of several hundred milligrams per litre. Designing on the assumption of near-complete removal produces a plant that never meets consent.

Advanced oxidation or adsorption on the treated stream addresses it. Applying either to raw retort water consumes chemical or media at a rate that makes the cost indefensible. Where several streams need joint treatment, Palm Oil Mill Effluent Treatment system is the more detailed reference.

Be clear with stakeholders early about what is achievable. This is a stream where incremental improvement has real costs, and a target set without understanding the refractory fraction will not be met.

Where This Fits in the Wider Plant

Where several streams need joint treatment, Coffee, Tea and Cocoa Processing Wastewater Treatment is the more detailed reference. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.

How long does a oil shale retorting system take to deliver?

Standard units ship in about 9 to 10 weeks. Custom trains with dephenolisation comes first included run longer — plan for 17 to 20 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.
