NdFeB Permanent Magnet Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment: Pickling, Rare Earth and Heavy Metals

NdFeB magnets are made from neodymium, iron and boron by casting, milling, pressing, sintering and machining, and the finishing steps are where the water is. Pickling and cleaning baths remove the oxide scale from the cast and sintered material. Grinding and slicing water carries a fine magnetic slurry. Plating and coating lines add the metals of the coating itself. The effluent is acidic, loaded with rare earth and heavy metal traces, and full of a dense fine solid, and the design that works neutralises early, precipitates the metals at controlled pH, and removes the slurry with a thickener before anything biological sees the water.

Where the Water Comes From

Pickling and cleaning baths are the strongest chemical stream. They carry free acid, the dissolved fraction of the scale, and traces of the alloy metals themselves.

Grinding, slicing and lapping water carries the fine magnetic slurry. It is dense, it settles, and it is worth recovering because it is still magnet material.

Plating and coating lines add nickel, copper or zinc depending on the finish, and they are the streams the discharge consent watches most closely.

Floor and equipment washing adds volume rather than load, and its contribution is the hydraulic design of the whole plant.

Neutralisation and Precipitation

pH correction comes before anything else. Lime dosing lifts the water above the range where the metal chemistry works, and the mixing has to be real, because acidic slugs reaching a clarifier kill the precipitation before it starts.

The metals are precipitated at controlled pH. The operating discipline is keeping that pH where the chemistry works, and the plants that track metals at the headworks rather than at the outfall catch recipe changes weeks before the regulator does.

The metal-bearing sludge is classified in most jurisdictions and disposed of accordingly. It is a modest volume, and it is a predictable cost, which is the best kind. The same selection criteria reappear in Retting Water, Pectin and High BOD, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Slurry Recovery

A thickener on the grinding and slicing stream recovers most of the water and returns it to the cutting circuit. The underflow is recovered magnet material where the plant's layout allows it.

The recovery rate decides the size of everything downstream, and it is the single number that the plant is designed around.

Screens ahead of the thickener catch the coarse fraction, and they are a small cost that protects everything behind them.

Reference Data from Our Own Projects

We commissioned a 100 m³/day plant for this duty in Xingtai, Hebei back in 2022. Feed COD came in around 2,300 mg/L and left at 216 mg/L — 90.6% removal.

A second unit of the same class, delivered in Putian, Fujian during 2021, ran 190 m³/day at 1,000 mg/L feed COD down to 500 mg/L.

Operating Notes

Precipitate the metals at controlled pH. The pH band is narrow, and drifting outside it is invisible until the consent result arrives. We have written about the downstream implications separately in malt house wastewater treatment.

Recover the grinding slurry. Material that returns to the process is material not purchased, and the payback is measured in months.

Track metals at the headworks. The outfall tells you what happened weeks ago; the headworks tells you what is happening now.

Integrated Treatment Strategies

Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Shiitake and Edible Mushroom Cultivation effluent. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.

Manufacturing Base in Guangdong

Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Spare Parts and After-Sales Support

We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. NdFeB Permanent Magnet Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.
