Lysine Amino Acid Fermentation Wastewater Treatment: High COD Broth and Ammonium Load

Lysine is produced by fermenting a sugar feed with a specially bred culture, and the water after product recovery is one of the stronger organic effluents in amino acid manufacturing. The spent broth carries residual sugar, the cell mass of the culture and a large ammonium load from the fermentation nutrition, and it is biodegradable enough that biology is the obvious route. The difficulty is the same one that faces monosodium glutamate and citric acid: the carbon and the nitrogen are both high, and a plant designed only for carbon removal discharges a nitrogen problem instead. Treat both, in the right order, and the stream responds well.

A Strong Broth With Ammonium

The spent fermentation broth after lysine recovery still holds dissolved organics from the sugar feed and from the metabolism of the culture, so the chemical oxygen demand is high by food-ingredient standards.

Ammonium is the distinguishing feature of amino acid fermentations. Nitrogen is added to drive the culture and it carries through, so the effluent arrives with an ammonium concentration that a municipal plant would struggle with and an ordinary food wastewater plant is not designed for.

The water is warm and acidic before neutralisation, so both temperature and pH correction are design inputs rather than details.

treatment plant on site

Because the organic fraction is readily biodegradable, the stream rewards anaerobic treatment more than many industrial effluents, and the gas it produces offsets a real share of the plant heat load.

Anaerobic digestion removes the bulk of the organic load and generates methane, which is the economic argument for the front end. What it does not do is remove the ammonium. For the reuse angle specifically, Molasses Distillery Spent Wash (Vinasse) Treatment goes further than we can here.

The anaerobic effluent is therefore lower in carbon but relatively richer in ammonium, which is the wrong ratio for a conventional nitrification-denitrification stage without a carbon source.

Plants handle this either by bypassing a fraction of the raw strong stream into the denitrification zone as a carbon source, or by adding an external one, and getting that split right is the difference between meeting the nitrogen consent and failing on ammonia. The process logic sits close to what is described in lithium-ion battery recycling wastewater treatment, particularly on the pretreatment side.

Sulfate From the Nutrition

The fermentation nutrition and the downstream processing add sulfate to the water, and sulfate in an anaerobic digester produces sulfide, which is a corrosion and odour matter more than a treatment one.

process equipment overview

Controlling sulfide is usually done by dosing or by treating the digester gas, and it is a routine part of running the front end rather than an emergency.

Where sulfate dominates, the recovered water has a salt floor that limits reuse, and that floor is measured before any recycle scheme is promised.

The Finishing Stage

Aerobic polishing after digestion takes out the residual demand and the nitrogen the fermentation carried, and it is a smaller stage behind a well-run digester.

Nitrifiers are slow-growing and sensitive, so the sludge retention time is the controlling variable and a plant that washes them out on hydraulic grounds recovers slowly. A related discussion worth reading here is Magnesium Production Wastewater Treatment system.

Reference Data from 42 Commissioned Plants

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Sludge from the biological train is organic and dewaters reasonably, and it is usually returned to the process or composted rather than handled as a hazardous residue.

Operating Notes

Design for nitrogen from the start. An amino acid broth carries enough ammonium that a carbon-only plant will fail its consent.

Reserve a carbon source for denitrification. The anaerobic effluent has the wrong ratio without one. Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Petrol Station UST Remediation.

Finally, keep the neutralisation stable. A pH swing into the acidic range upstream will be felt in the digester days later.

Integrated Treatment Strategies

A related discussion worth reading here is Oleochemical Plant effluent. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Choosing a manufacturer here comes down to one question: who is still accountable once the commissioning team flies home. Our answer is that we build and programme our own equipment, then stand behind it for the life of the plant.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Twenty-Plus Export Markets

We have shipped to the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, India, Nigeria and Vietnam among others. Crating, export documentation and certificates are handled in-house, which keeps customs surprises to a minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

What treatment capacity do you normally design for lysine amino acid fermentation?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 43 to 751 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Lysine Amino Acid Fermentation Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.

How do you handle sludge from this process?

Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.
