E-Waste and WEEE Recycling Wastewater Treatment: Metals, Fluoride and Plastic Fines

Electronics recycling is a mechanical separation industry with a hydrometallurgical back end, and both halves produce water that needs treating. Shredders and density separation tanks generate large volumes of suspended plastic and metal fines. Circuit board and battery processing produce the genuinely difficult streams — acidic, metal-laden, and in the case of lithium cells, carrying fluoride from the electrolyte. The volumes are modest. The hazard classification of the sludge is not.

Mechanical Processing: Fines, Not Metals

Shredding, magnetic separation, eddy current separation and air classification are mostly dry. The water appears in density or sink-float separation, where plastics are split by specific gravity in a water bath, and in wet scrubbers controlling shredder dust.

The resulting water carries high suspended solids — fine plastic and glass particles that are slow to settle and tend to float rather than sink depending on the polymer — plus dissolved and particulate metals from the comminuted boards and casings. COD is usually moderate; TSS and metals are the design parameters.

Coagulation-flocculation followed by dissolved air flotation suits this stream better than gravity sedimentation, because a significant fraction of the solids is buoyant or neutrally buoyant. Screening ahead of everything else protects downstream pumps from the abrasive glass fraction, which is present wherever display glass is processed.

CRT and Display Glass Washing

Cathode ray tube glass is the legacy stream that still catches plants out. Panel glass is a barium-strontium silicate, and funnel glass carries 20 to 25 percent lead oxide. Washing and crushing it produces alkaline water with lead and barium at concentrations that make the effluent hazardous in its own right.

Segregation at the point of dismantling is the correct control. Depollution — removing batteries, capacitors, mercury-containing lamps and CRT assemblies before shredding — keeps lead out of the general shredder water and confines it to a much smaller, more manageable stream.

Where lead is in the water, hydroxide precipitation to pH 9 to 10 with coagulation and filtration is normally sufficient, and sulphide polishing gets it lower where the limit is tight. The sludge from this stream is hazardous and its disposal cost should be in the business case, not discovered later. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Wood Panel and Furniture Manufacturing effluent.

Lithium Battery Black Mass: Fluoride Is the Problem

Hydrometallurgical recovery from black mass dissolves cobalt, nickel, manganese and lithium from the cathode powder using acid and a reductant, leaving an acidic leach liquor and metal-bearing rinse water. Those are conventional metals streams, treatable by precipitation and, where the value justifies it, by solvent extraction for recovery.

Fluoride is the distinctive contaminant and it comes from the electrolyte. Lithium hexafluorophosphate hydrolyses in water to produce hydrofluoric acid, so any process that gets battery electrolyte wet generates fluoride — and the water from it is acidic and corrosive as well as toxic.

Removal Rates Across Our Installed Base

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Removal is by calcium precipitation as calcium fluoride, usually with lime or calcium chloride, but calcium fluoride solubility limits the achievable concentration to around 8 to 15 mg/L in practice. Meeting a low fluoride limit therefore needs a second stage: aluminium salt coagulation, activated alumina, or a specialised adsorbent. Plants that only install the lime stage find this out on the first compliance sample.

There is a safety dimension too. Damaged lithium cells in water or in a shredder can ignite, and wetting electrolyte releases HF gas. Ventilation, gas detection and fire suppression sized for lithium fires are part of the water and solids handling design, not an add-on.

Circuit Board Hydrometallurgy and Rinse Water

Leaching copper, gold, silver, tin and palladium from boards produces spent leach solutions and rinse water with a mixed heavy metal content in an acidic matrix. Cyanide and thiosulphate leaching routes add the complication of complexed metals, which do not precipitate as hydroxides until the complexing agent is destroyed. A related discussion worth reading here is Alkaline High-pH Effluent.

e-waste recycling wastewater treatment installation

Alkaline chlorination, hydrogen peroxide with a catalyst, or ozone are the standard destruction methods for cyanide complexes, applied before neutralisation and precipitation. Complexed copper from ammoniacal etching solutions needs the same attention — sulphide precipitation or ion exchange is usually more effective than hydroxide precipitation alone.

Rinse water from electrowinning and stripping is lower strength and, after neutralisation and metals precipitation, often suitable for reuse in scrubber make-up, which is a useful way to reduce the discharge volume.

Outdoor storage of incoming e-waste is common and it leaches. First flush from a storage yard carries metals and, from older material, brominated flame retardant residues. Collecting the first flush to the treatment system and diverting clean runoff around the yard is standard good practice and prevents a small problem becoming a large dilute one.

The consolidated sludge from all of these streams is typically hazardous: heavy metals, possibly brominated organics, and in some jurisdictions classified by leachate test rather than by total content. Dewatering to the driest achievable cake, containment under cover, and realistic disposal cost per tonne belong in the operating budget from the start.

One design principle covers most of this: keep the streams separate until you have decided what each one needs, because mixing a large volume of plastic fines water with a small volume of battery leachate produces a large volume of hazardous water. The process logic sits close to what is described in foundry and die casting wastewater treatment, particularly on the pretreatment side.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries

Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

What happens if the incoming e-waste recycling load exceeds the design figure?

Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.
