Citric Acid Fermentation Wastewater Treatment: High COD, Sulphate and Calcium Scaling

Citric acid is made by fermentation and recovered by precipitation, and the recovery route dictates the wastewater. Aspergillus niger ferments a sugar substrate, the broth is neutralised with calcium carbonate to form calcium citrate, and that salt is then split with sulphuric acid to release citric acid and leave calcium sulphate. The consequences are a strong organic stream, a very high sulphate load, and calcium sulphate scaling that quietly destroys equipment.

What Leaves the Plant

The main stream is the spent fermentation liquor after the citrate has been precipitated out — often called the mother liquor or the waste beer depending on where in the sequence you sample. COD is commonly 10,000 to 30,000 mg/L and mostly readily biodegradable: residual sugar, organic acids, and fungal biomass.

Then there is the acidulation filtrate. After sulphuric acid splits the calcium citrate, the liquor left behind is saturated or near-saturated with calcium sulphate and carries much of the residual organic load. Sulphate concentrations run into several thousand milligrams per litre, sometimes well beyond.

Ion exchange and activated carbon polishing steps, where used, add their own spent regenerant — acidic, saline, and high in whatever was adsorbed. These are small volume and best kept separate.

Anaerobic Treatment and the Sulphate Ceiling

On paper this wastewater is a good anaerobic candidate: high biodegradable COD, warm, and enough biogas to matter. In practice the sulphate caps what you can achieve.

Sulphate-reducing bacteria compete with methanogens for the same substrate. The higher the sulphate relative to COD, the more of the carbon goes to sulphide instead of methane. Practically, that means lower methane yield, hydrogen sulphide in the biogas, and corrosion risk through the gas handling system.

Once the COD-to-sulphate ratio drops below roughly ten to one, the competition becomes the dominant effect and reactor performance starts to look disappointing despite apparently healthy operation. Where that is the case, consider splitting the stream: treat the low-sulphate fermentation liquor anaerobically and handle the acidulation filtrate separately. A related discussion worth reading here is Sand, Gravel and Aggregate Washing Water Treatment system.

Biogas scrubbing is not optional at these sulphate levels. Budget for it from the start rather than retrofitting after the first corrosion failure.

Calcium Sulphate Scaling

This is the failure mode that catches plants out, and it is a maintenance problem as much as a treatment one. Where a calcium-rich stream meets a sulphate-rich stream, gypsum precipitates. It forms hard, adherent scale on pipework, heat exchanger surfaces, membrane elements and diffusers.

The usual mistake is mixing streams before treatment. Segregating the calcium-bearing and sulphate-bearing streams, and only combining them under controlled conditions after a deliberate softening or precipitation step, prevents most of it.

Reference Data from 42 Commissioned Plants

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Where scale has already formed, chemical cleaning works but is slow and the deposits resist ordinary acid cleaning. Mechanical access and removable spool pieces are worth specifying in the design. Where several streams need joint treatment, RO, EDI and Polishing Design is the more detailed reference.

Antiscalant dosing helps on membrane systems but does not eliminate the problem — it buys intervals between cleans, it does not change the thermodynamics.

Recovering Rather Than Discharging

There is genuine value sitting in this wastewater. Calcium sulphate is gypsum, and at sufficient purity it is saleable to the Gypsum board and cement industries. Recovering it turns a disposal cost into a product and removes a large fraction of what would otherwise become sludge.

Residual citric acid in the mother liquor can be recovered by chromatography or further precipitation if concentrations justify it. Whether it does is a plant-specific calculation worth doing before you size treatment.

Biogas from the anaerobic stage is the third recovery. Between them, a plant that recovers properly frequently finds its end-of-pipe treatment requirement is much smaller than originally assumed.

Fermentation liquor is carbon-rich and usually short of nitrogen and phosphorus. Dose to a sensible ratio and confirm by monitoring rather than by calculation alone — the theoretical ratio and the bioavailable ratio are not the same thing in high-sulphate systems.

pH control matters continuously. Acidulation streams are strongly acidic, and the alkalinity generated in anaerobic treatment will not buffer a sustained low-pH slug. Equalisation of at least twelve hours is a floor for these plants given how batchy the acidulation step is. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Ready-Mix Concrete Washout Water Treatment.

Watch volatile fatty acids as an early indicator. VFA accumulation shows up well before pH moves, and it gives you a day or two of warning instead of a day or two of recovery.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

Manufacturing Base in Guangdong

Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is citric acid fermentation treatment suitable for water reuse?

Usually yes, once the anaerobic treatment and the sulphate ceiling stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.

Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?

Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Citric Acid Fermentation Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.

Do you export and support overseas installations?

We have shipped to the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Russia, Vietnam and Nigeria among others. Documentation, crating and export paperwork are handled in-house, and we support commissioning either remotely or with engineers on site.

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

What spare parts should we hold on site?

Critical spares are pumps, dosing valves, instrumentation sensors and any specialty media. We ship a recommended spares kit with the plant and hold stock for everything we supply, so lead times on replacements stay short.
