Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis: Brine Concentrate and Reject Management

Brackish water reverse osmosis is how a lot of usable water gets made from wells and estuaries that are too salty to drink, and every litre it produces leaves behind a smaller, saltier litre it cannot. That reject — the brine concentrate — is the part nobody advertises, and it is where most of the real engineering lives. It carries everything the feed had, concentrated several times, plus the antiscalant and acid you added. Treat the concentrate as the constrained output of the whole plant, and plan for it from day one rather than discovering it after commissioning.

The Concentrate Is the Constraint

Reverse osmosis splits feed into permeate and concentrate, and the concentrate holds the rejected salt, silica and hardness at several times feed strength. The higher the recovery you chase, the nastier that concentrate becomes.

Most of the operating cost and all of the disposal difficulty sit in the concentrate, not the permeate. A plant that quietly assumes the reject will just go somewhere is a plant that gets surprised by its own brine. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in urea plant wastewater treatment.

Recovery is a design choice with consequences. Push it up and the concentrate gets closer to scaling and precipitation limits; back off and you make more brine to dispose of. The balance is site-specific.

The good news is the chemistry is known. Because you measure the feed, you can model where the concentrate will precipitate and design around it instead of learning the hard way.

Scaling and Silica

Calcium, barium, strontium and silica are the usual culprits that drop out of solution as the concentrate concentrates. They foul membranes irreversibly if the design lets them reach saturation.

Antiscalant and acid dosing hold these in solution through the first pass, but there is a hard limit past which no dose helps and the water has to be rejected or further concentrated by a different method.

Silica is the stubborn one. It stays dissolved well past where salts precipitate and then forms a glassy foul that is brutal to clean, so the silica limit, not the salt limit, often sets the maximum recovery.

Pretreatment quality decides everything downstream. A weak pretreatment lets colloidal and scaling species reach the membrane, and the concentrate stage is where that debt gets called in.

The cheapest concentrate to dispose of is the volume you never make, so a second pass or a different membrane configuration that squeezes more permeate out of the reject is the first move. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Chrome Chemical Wastewater Treatment.

Further concentration by a brine RO stage or electrodialysis takes the reject down to a much smaller volume, which is what makes distant or costly disposal tolerable. The same selection criteria reappear in Activated Carbon Production Wastewater, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Evaporation and crystallisation close the loop to zero liquid discharge where regulation or site constraints demand it, but they are energy-intensive and reserved for the last, smallest fraction.

Do not over-concentrate on the first pass. Staging the concentration lets each stage run within its scaling envelope and keeps cleaning frequencies sane.

Disposal and Reuse

Where a sewer or a controlled outfall accepts high-TDS brine, the concentrate goes there at a cost tied to its salt load. That cost is ongoing, so it belongs in the life-cycle maths.

Reference Data from 42 Commissioned Plants

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Evaporation ponds suit hot, low-rainfall sites with cheap land, but they need lining and a real evaporation surplus or they just become a salty lake that neighbours object to.

Reuse on site — dust suppression, cooling make-up, process make-up — absorbs concentrate where the application tolerates the salt, and that is the most economical sink when it exists.

Characterise the concentrate before committing. Trace elements and the antiscalant residues dictate whether a reuse or discharge route is even open.

Operating Notes

Design the concentrate train before you commission, not after. The reject is the constrained output and the bulk of the cost.

Let the silica limit set recovery, not the salt. Silica scaling is the foul you cannot easily clean.

Finally, stage the concentration. Each stage within its scaling envelope keeps recovery high and cleaning frequency low.

Combining Treatment Stages

A related discussion worth reading here is Natural Graphite Mining effluent. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

Manufacturing Base in Guangdong

Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.

Two Decades of Field Data

Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Complete Units and Turnkey Plants

Whether you need a single package unit or a turnkey installation with civil works, we deliver the entire treatment scheme. Our engineering team covers process, mechanical, electrical and automation so one party owns the outcome.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.

What information do you need to quote?

Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.

Which discharge standard will the treated water meet?

We design against whatever consent applies at your boundary — GB 8978, local sewer limits, or a ZLD target with no liquid discharge at all. The design basis is agreed in writing before fabrication, so there is no argument later about what "compliant" meant.
