Baihuipu helps the electroplating factory in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire achieve zero wastewater discharge and cost savings

Customer Background: 

A large hardware and electroplating factory located in the industrial zone of Abidjan, the economic capital of Côte d'Ivoire, supplies parts to European automotive brands. Its production covers multiple lines such as nickel plating, chromium plating, and zinc plating, generating approximately 150 tons of wastewater with high concentrations of heavy metals, cyanides, and high salinity every day. The factory faces two major challenges: 1) The local environmental protection department has a heavy inspection pressure, and traditional treatment methods are difficult to maintain stable compliance; 2) The tap water quality is hard, and the yield of electroplating fluctuates greatly, with the proportion of water and wastewater treatment costs in the total cost increasing day by day. 


Baihuipu Customized Solution: 

After conducting on-site surveys and conducting water quality analyses, the Baohupu technical team designed and delivered an integrated system for "zero discharge of electroplating wastewater (ZLD) and reuse of ultra-pure water", enabling the wastewater treatment line and the pure water production line to operate intelligently and in a coordinated manner. 


Phase 1: Advanced wastewater treatment and resource recovery 

1. Quality-based collection and pre-treatment: Wastewater containing cyanide, chromium, and those from comprehensive acid washing are collected separately, and then undergo alkaline chlorination for cyanide removal and chemical reduction and precipitation for pre-treatment. 

2. Membrane-based concentration and reduction: The pretreated wastewater is fed into the special anti-pollution ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) systems, where heavy metal ions and most of the salts are effectively concentrated. The water recovery rate on the clean liquid side exceeds 85%. 

3. Zero-emission core - Evaporation and crystallization: The concentrated liquid enters the Baohupu high-efficiency MVR evaporation and crystallization system, where soluble solids are converted into dry crystalline salts (which can undergo hazardous waste identification and compliant disposal), and the condensate water is reused in the production process. 


Phase Two: Intelligent Preparation and Circulation of Ultra-Pure Water 

Dual water supply: The system is equipped with two water intake points, allowing the use of both municipal tap water and the high-quality reclaimed water produced in the first stage as raw water. 

2. Two-stage purification process: The raw water undergoes pre-treatment of "sand filtration + carbon filtration + softening", and then enters the core "double-stage reverse osmosis (RO) system", with the electrical resistivity of the produced water reaching 1-10 MΩ·cm. 

3. Terminal purification: The RO-produced water enters the polishing mixed bed system, and finally stable electroplating-grade ultra-pure water with a resistivity of ≥ 18.2 MΩ·cm is produced. It is transported through an independent pipeline to the solution preparation stations of each electroplating tank and the final cleaning tank. 


Implementation Results and Value: 

Environmental compliance: Achieved zero liquid discharge of production wastewater, successfully passed the strict inspection of the environmental department in Côte d'Ivoire, and was awarded the "Green Factory" demonstration title. 

Economic benefits: 

Water conservation: The overall water resource recovery rate exceeds 90%, and the annual savings in fresh water costs exceed **%. 

Material saving: The use of ultra-pure water for solution preparation enhances the stability of the plating solution and reduces the consumption of additives by approximately 15%. 

Improvement: The yield rate of electroplated parts has increased from 89% to 96%, and the surface finish has significantly improved. 

Management Enhancement: The intelligent control system significantly reduces the intensity and complexity of manual operations, and the remote operation support ensures that factory management is worry-free. 


Case Insights: 

In Côte d'Ivoire, environmental compliance is no longer just a "cost center", but can be transformed into a "value center" through technological innovation. The ZLD and ultra-pure water integration solution of Baohupu provides a clear upgrade path that prioritizes both economic and environmental benefits for electroplating and similar highly polluting industries in Côte d'Ivoire and the entire West Africa region.
