Reverse Osmosis and Ultrapure Water Systems for Battery and Semiconductor Plants: From RO to EDI

Ultrapure water is the quiet enabler of every battery cell and semiconductor line, and it is unforgiving. The difference between water that meets the resistivity and particles specification and water that does not is rarely the final polishing step — it is the cumulative discipline of every stage before it. Reverse osmosis carries most of the load, removing the bulk of dissolved solids at a fraction of the cost of the polishing stages that follow. Electrodeionisation then polishes the last trace ions. The plants that hold their numbers treat the whole train as one instrumented system, not a stack of boxes bought separately, and that is the discipline new-energy and electronics manufacturers most often underestimate.

What Ultrapure Water Actually Has to Be

For semiconductor and battery duty, ultrapure water is specified in resistivity, total organic carbon, dissolved silica, particles and dissolved oxygen, often at limits measured in parts per billion.

Those limits are not arbitrary. A single metallic ion or a speck of organics on a wafer or an electrode surface can ruin a batch that cost far more than the water system that fed it. We set out the wider process route in zero liquid discharge industrial effluent.

The target is so tight that the entire train is really a contamination-avoidance exercise, with each stage removing a class of impurity the previous one could not reach.

This is why the feed water characterisation matters so much: designing the train against an average municipal analysis instead of the worst realistic feed is how plants drift out of spec during their first production ramp.

Reverse Osmosis Carries the Bulk Load

RO removes the great majority of dissolved ions, silica and most organics in a single pressure-driven pass, and it does so at a cost per cubic metre that the downstream polishing stages cannot match.

Recovery is the design lever. Push recovery too high and scaling species concentrate against the membrane and foul it; leave it conservative and you waste water and money on the polishing side.

Two-pass RO is common where the feed is difficult or the final spec is tight, because the second pass cleans up what the first left and gives the EDI a stable, low-load feed.

Our work on electroplating and semiconductor wastewater treats the reject and the permeate together as one water balance, and the same thinking applies here: the RO reject needs a route before the train is commissioned.

EDI Polishing and the Last Trace Ions

Electrodeionisation takes the RO permeate the final step, continuously removing residual ions with ion-exchange resin regenerated by the current itself rather than by chemical regeneration.

Because there is no acid or caustic regeneration, EDI fits clean rooms and sites that do not want a chemical regeneration stream running through their pure-water area.

Measured Results from Plants We Built

One reference point: a 10 m³/day installation we delivered in Fuyang, Anhui (2022) was treating feed at roughly 17,938 mg/L COD and holding discharge near 150 mg/L, about 99.2% removal. The train was Fenton + UASB anaerobic + denitrification + contact oxidation + MBR.

Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.

EDI is sensitive to its feed. Colloidal and organic fouling of the resin beds is the most common cause of resistivity creep, which is why the RO and the upstream filtration have to be doing their job first.

Where the spec is less extreme, a polishing mixed bed can substitute, but for high-volume electronics lines EDI is the workhorse and it is engineered as part of the pure-water scope rather than bolted on.

TOC, Silica and the Monitoring Discipline

TOC and silica are the parameters that quietly breach spec while everything else looks fine, because they are not what most operators watch hour to hour. UV oxidation upstream or a dedicated TOC analyser at the header is how they are kept honest.

Online resistivity, TOC and silica at the use point, with alarms tied to a defined diversion action, turn a monthly lab report into a control loop.

That monitoring discipline is the same one our new-energy water systems rely on, because a battery line that suddenly sees organic contamination in its rinse water finds out the expensive way without it. Plants facing comparable loads will find our electroplating and semiconductor wastewater treatment covers much of the same ground.

Automatic diversion on out-of-spec is not optional for this class of water. One silent shipment of bad ultrapure water costs more trust than a year of monitoring budget.

Sizing, Redundancy and Centralised Supply

Pure-water trains are usually designed with duty-standby on the high-value items and sized on peak demand including the simultaneous clean-in-place draws that water systems always seem to have.

For sites drawing from a municipal or centralised supply, the pre-treatment has to handle what arrives, not what the brochure promised, which is why a characterisation campaign precedes any serious design.

Where the whole site runs on one water balance, integrating the pure-water make-up with the treated-water and reuse streams is where the real savings live, and it is a system design rather than a product purchase.

The practical result we see across deployments is that the plants which last are the ones where the RO, EDI and monitoring were specified together by one party who owns the outcome.

Combining Treatment Stages

If your site runs this duty too, centralized water supply and pure water systems goes further on the selection and sizing detail. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Picking a supplier for this kind of plant is mostly about who carries the risk when something goes wrong. We have built this equipment for more than twenty years, and we are the ones who fabricated it, programmed the controls and will still answer the phone three years from now.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Certification and Export Practice

CE marking is standard and we work to ISO 9001 procedures. Where a project calls for specific material grades, pressure vessel certification or ATEX-rated equipment, we build to that standard and ship the full documentation pack.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

Spares, Service and Commissioning

Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Documentation You Can Actually Audit

Each system ships with as-built drawings, material certificates, welding records and a functional specification. If a client's own consultant wants to review the process calculation basis, we hand it over rather than treating it as proprietary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What treatment capacity do you normally design for reverse osmosis ultrapure water system?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 47 to 603 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.

How long does a reverse osmosis ultrapure system take to deliver?

Standard units ship in about 10 to 11 weeks. Custom trains with reverse osmosis carries the bulk load included run longer — plan for 17 to 24 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.

What happens if the incoming reverse osmosis ultrapure load exceeds the design figure?

Load swings are the most common reason plants underperform. We set the design envelope from your worst-case samples, not your average ones, and specify enough buffer in the biological stage to ride out shocks. If your process genuinely shifts up permanently, we can usually add capacity in stages.

Do you handle installation and operator training? The operating detail behind this sits in food beverage wastewater treatment.

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.
