Poultry Processing Wastewater Treatment: Blood, Feathers and the Grease That Fouls the Screen
A poultry plant runs on water — scalding, defeathering, evisceration and chill all use it by the truckload — and what comes back is about as unpleasant as industrial wastewater gets. Blood from the kill line is extraordinarily high in BOD. Feathers and offal wash add coarse solids and fat. The chill tanks contribute the steady volume. It is warm, smelly, full of suspended matter and biologically very strong, but it is also highly treatable if the solids and the blood are pulled early, because everything left is just food for a digester.
Where the Water Comes From
Kill-line blood is the shock load. A few minutes of bleeding contributes a disproportionate share of the BOD, and if it reaches the biology in a slug it can knock the culture back for days.
Scald and defeather wash carry feathers and grease. The feathers are coarse and tangle screens; the grease floats and has to be skimmed or it coats everything downstream.
Evisceration and offal wash add the solids and the smell. Gut content and fine particles make up the septic fraction that turns sour fastest if held. The same selection criteria reappear in Tannery and Leather Wastewater Treatment system, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Chill-tank overflow is the steady volume. It is the cleanest of the streams by strength but the largest by far, and it sets the hydraulic size of the whole train.
Blood and the BOD Spike
Blood is the single highest-strength stream in the plant. Captured separately it is almost pure protein; lost to the general drain it is a BOD bomb that overwhelms a biomass sized for the average.

Most plants collect it. Coagulation or simple settling pulls the blood solids, and recovered blood meal has a real feed value that offsets part of the treatment cost.
The lesson is containment. A plant that routes the kill line to its own small tank avoids the spike that otherwise forces the whole biological stage to be built for a peak it sees for minutes a day.
Solids, Feathers and Grease
Feathers tangle screens, so a coarse bar screen leads and a fine one follows. Skipped screening means a blinded fine screen and a solids load dumped forward onto the clarifier.
What This Looks Like in Practice
We commissioned a 6 m³/day plant for this duty in Wenshui, Shanxi back in 2021. Feed COD came in around 172,000 mg/L and left at 5,000 mg/L — 97.1% removal. The train was hydrolysis acidification + DAF + oil separation + ultrafiltration.
| Location | Year | Flow | Feed COD | Treated COD | Removal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wenshui, Shanxi | 2021 | 6 m³/d | 172,000 mg/L | 5,000 mg/L | 97.1% |
Figures are site-measured values from commissioned plants, not modelled estimates.

Grease floats and must be skimmed. A DAF unit on the fatty streams recovers the fat and protects the diffusers and membranes that grease destroys on contact.
Gut-content solids are the septic fraction. Pulled early by sedimentation they are a manageable sludge; held in the equalisation tank they sour and gas off, and the smell closes plants.
Warm, Strong and Treatable
After solids and grease removal the stream is a warm, high-BOD liquor that anaerobic digestion loves. A digester takes the bulk and returns biogas, and the methane often covers a slice of the plant's own steam.

The aerobic polish handles residual BOD and the nitrogen from the blood and offal. It is compact because the anaerobic step did the heavy lifting.
Equalisation has to absorb the daily shift pattern. A plant processes in batches through the day, and the biology sees the average only if the tank holds the peak rather than the lull.

What We Tell Plants First
Catch the blood separately. It is the highest-strength stream by far and the one that wrecks a biomass if it arrives as a slug. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Winery effluent covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.
Screen coarse before fine and skim the grease. Feathers and fat are the two things that foul every downstream unit if they get through.
Do not hold the gut-content solids. They sour and stink within hours; pull them early and the smell problem largely disappears.
Integrated Treatment Strategies
Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in Tea Beverage Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment system. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.
Manufacturing Base in Guangdong
Owned production lines mean we control tolerances, materials and delivery. Standard modular units and bespoke skids are both built by our own people, so schedule commitments are ours to keep.
Two Decades of Field Data
Food and beverage, chemicals, electroplating, textile dyeing, mining, municipal work — we have commissioned across all of them. The useful part is not the project count, it is having seen how plants fail in year seven and designing those failures out.
Complete System Responsibility
One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.
Spare Parts and After-Sales Support
We carry membranes, pumps, blowers, diffusers and instruments for every system we supply. Remote support through the PLC is standard on most builds, and on-site service covers commissioning, training and urgent callouts.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much operator attention does the system need day to day?
Automatic control handles dosing, backwash and level control. Realistically your team spends time on chemical top-up, sample testing and sludge handling — maybe one to two hours per shift on poultry processing duty, less if you opt for remote monitoring.
What information do you need to quote?
Water analysis for your worst-case stream, peak and average flows, discharge limits, available footprint and utilities. If you do not have a full analysis yet, we can start from a partial one and flag the gaps.
Is poultry processing treatment suitable for water reuse?
Usually yes, once the blood and the bod spike stage is stable. Reuse normally means adding membrane polishing to bring conductivity and COD down to your process water specification. We would need to see your reuse water limits to size it properly.
Which discharge standard will the treated water meet?
We design against whatever consent applies at your boundary — GB 8978, local sewer limits, or a ZLD target with no liquid discharge at all. The design basis is agreed in writing before fabrication, so there is no argument later about what "compliant" meant.
