Nitric Acid and Ammonium Nitrate Production Wastewater Treatment: Nitrate and Ammonia

Nitric acid plants and their downstream ammonium nitrate units produce wastewater whose dominant constituent is exactly what the process makes — nitrogen. Neutralisation, scrubber water and spillage all carry ammonia and nitrate, sometimes at concentrations where recovery is worth more than treatment, and nitrogen is the parameter that will decide whether the plant complies.

Neutralisation Is Straightforward, Nitrate Is Not

Weak acid streams and scrubber blowdown are readily neutralised with ammonia or caustic. The chemistry is elementary and rarely the problem.Using ammonia as the neutralising agent is convenient since it is already on site, and it produces ammonium nitrate — which is the product, not a waste.

Nitrate is a different matter. It does not precipitate, it does not adsorb onto conventional media, and it is not removed by any physical separation available at industrial scale.Removal is biological denitrification or nothing.

That means every nitrate-bearing stream needs a carbon source, an anoxic zone and enough retention time.Plants that neutralise carefully and discharge without denitrification frequently discover they have solved the pH problem and not the compliance problem. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Spirits Distillery effluent covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Denitrification Needs Carbon

Heterotrophic denitrification requires an electron donor, and nitrogen plant wastewater is carbon-free by definition. External carbon — methanol, acetate, glycerol or a commercial blend — has to be supplied continuously. If your site also runs this kind of duty, Seaweed Processing Wastewater Treatment system covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.

Carbon cost is usually the dominant operating expense on this duty. It is also where the design work pays: matching carbon dose to actual nitrate load with good control typically saves more than any equipment selection decision.

Methanol works well and is cheap, but it needs acclimated biomass and careful handling for flammability.Acetate responds faster and starts more quickly. Glycerol is often the cheapest per electron and increasingly used where supply is reliable. Much of this mirrors the situation set out in Refractory Manufacturing effluent.

Autotrophic options exist — sulphur-based or hydrogen-based denitrification — and suit plants where carbon delivery is logistically awkward. They produce sulphate as a by-product, which matters if sulphate is also limited.

Reference Data from 42 Commissioned Plants

Across 42 commissioned plants where we hold complete COD records, influent COD ranged from 200 to 172,000 mg/L and treated effluent from 50 to 5,000 mg/L. Average removal across that set is 87.1% — not a marketing figure, but the measured mean.

That average is worth pausing on. It sits well below the 95%-plus numbers most suppliers quote, because the set includes genuinely difficult streams. On some electroplating and municipal duties the installed configuration only reaches about half the influent COD, and saying that up front is more use to you than a number the plant will never hold.

Ammonium Nitrate Recovery

Prill tower scrubber water and evaporator condensate carry ammonium nitrate worth recovering. Concentrations are often a few percent, and returning that solution to the process recovers product and removes nitrogen from the effluent simultaneously.

Recovery is usually evaporation or reverse osmosis depending on concentration and energy cost. Both produce a clean condensate that can go back into the plant as water, closing the loop on both product and water.

Run the economics on actual analyses.Recovery pays at higher concentrations and not below them, and the crossover is lower than most operators assume — worth costing before deciding to treat.

Operating Notes

Watch for ammonia toxicity and pH rise together. Free ammonia increases sharply above pH nine, and neutralisation that overshoots can convert a manageable ammonium load into an inhibitory one.

Keep nitrate loading instrumented ahead of the denitrification stage.Carbon dosing on a fixed ratio wastes reagent when load falls and under-doses when it rises, and the second case shows up as a consent breach. A related discussion worth reading here is Fluorspar Beneficiation Wastewater.

Integrated Treatment Strategies

The same selection criteria reappear in CCA, Copper and Arsenic Control, which is worth opening alongside this one. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.

Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer

Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.

In-House Fabrication

Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.

Experience Built the Hard Way

Since the early 2000s we have commissioned plants for food and beverage processors, chemical works, electroplaters, textile mills, mines and municipalities. The lessons that stick are scaling, fouling and sludge handling — those inform every design we issue.

Complete System Responsibility

One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.

After the Handover

Spares for everything we install are held in stock. Remote telemetry is available on most systems, and our service engineers commission, train your operators and turn out for emergencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a nitric acid ammonium system take to deliver?

Standard units ship in about 9 to 13 weeks. Custom trains with denitrification needs carbon included run longer — plan for 14 to 20 weeks once detailed engineering starts. Site installation and wet commissioning add another few weeks.

Do you handle installation and operator training?

Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.

How do you handle sludge from this process?

Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.

Can you work with our existing equipment?

Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.

What does it cost to run, per cubic metre?

Energy dominates, then chemicals, then sludge disposal. We give you a per-cubic-metre breakdown during proposal so you can compare it against your sewer charge — treating too aggressively is a common and expensive mistake.

What treatment capacity do you normally design for nitric acid ammonium nitrate?

Skid-mounted units cover roughly 16 to 1191 m³/day depending on the duty, and parallel trains extend that further. We size against your actual peak hour flow rather than the daily average, because equalisation rarely absorbs the whole spike.
