Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery Production Wastewater Treatment: Hydrogen Storage Alloy, Nickel Foam and KOH
A nickel-metal hydride battery stores hydrogen in a rare earth alloy and pairs it with a nickel hydroxide electrode. The manufacturing water carries both halves of that chemistry. The negative electrode is coated with an AB5 hydrogen storage alloy slurry, and its wash water carries the rare earth fraction. The positive electrode is built on nickel foam or nickel-plated steel, and its wash water carries nickel and the alkaline electrolyte traces. The effluent is alkaline, metal-laden and loaded with a fine dense solid, and the design that works neutralises early, recovers the nickel and rare earth fraction where the volume justifies it, and precipitates the rest at controlled pH.
Where the Water Comes From
The negative electrode coating line produces wash water carrying the rare earth hydrogen storage alloy slurry. It is dense, it settles, and it is worth recovering because it is still product material.
The positive electrode line produces wash water carrying nickel from the foam or the plated substrate, and the alkaline electrolyte traces from the filling step.

Assembly and formation water adds the dilute alkaline wash load, and clean-in-place circuits add heat and slugs.
Floor and equipment washing adds volume rather than load, and its contribution is the hydraulic design of the whole plant.

Neutralisation First
pH correction comes before anything else. The alkaline stream is neutralised with acid dosing, and the mixing has to be real, because alkaline slugs reaching a clarifier kill the precipitation before it starts.
Neutralisation also precipitates a share of the dissolved metals as hydroxide, which joins the solids in the thickener rather than travelling to the outfall.
The neutralisation point is where the plant sees the truth about its own variability, and operators who sample there know their real peaks. The same selection criteria reappear in Silicon Carbide Production Wastewater Treatment, which is worth opening alongside this one.

Metals Recovery and Precipitation
The nickel and rare earth fraction is recovered where the volume justifies it, and the recovery rate decides the economics of the whole plant. If your site also runs this kind of duty, NdFeB Permanent Magnet Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment system covers the cost side of the decision in more depth.
The remaining metals are precipitated at controlled pH, and the operating discipline is keeping that pH where the chemistry works. Plants that track metals at the headworks rather than at the outfall catch recipe changes weeks before the regulator does.

The metal-bearing sludge is classified in most jurisdictions and disposed of accordingly. It is a modest volume, and it is a predictable cost, which is the best kind.
Numbers from Comparable Installations
One reference point: a 20 m³/day installation we delivered in Nantong, Jiangsu (2022) was treating feed at roughly 43,040 mg/L COD and holding discharge near 500 mg/L, about 98.8% removal. The train was Fenton + primary sedimentation + DAF + hydrolysis acidification + contact oxidation.
A second unit of the same class, delivered in Shijiazhuang, Hebei during 2022, ran 10 m³/day at 1,750 mg/L feed COD down to 90 mg/L.
| Location | Year | Flow | Feed COD | Treated COD | Removal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nantong, Jiangsu | 2022 | 20 m³/d | 43,040 mg/L | 500 mg/L | 98.8% |
| Shijiazhuang, Hebei | 2022 | 10 m³/d | 1,750 mg/L | 90 mg/L | 94.9% |

Operating Notes
Neutralise early. Alkaline water into a thickener is a slow, expensive way to learn about pH. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Solar Panel Recycling Wastewater Treatment system.

Recover the alloy slurry where you can. Material that returns to the process is material not purchased, and the payback is measured in months.
Track metals at the headworks. The outfall tells you what happened weeks ago; the headworks tells you what is happening now. We have written about the downstream implications separately in Rice Milling and Processing effluent.
Integrated Treatment Strategies
Plants dealing with comparable loads face many of the same trade-offs covered in peanut processing plant wastewater treatment. Most facilities do not run a single clean stream, and a shared equalisation and biological stage is usually the economical answer once the streams are chemically compatible.
Why Choose Baihuipu as Your Manufacturer
Two decades in this industry teaches you that most treatment problems are procurement problems in disguise. Someone bought the cheapest skid, nobody checked the equalisation volume, and eighteen months on the plant cannot hold its consent limit. We build differently.
In-House Fabrication
Our Guangdong works produces everything from standard modular units to fully bespoke lines. Building in-house keeps cost, schedule and quality under our own control rather than a subcontractor's goodwill.
20+ Years Across Dozens of Industries
Experience matters most when your waste stream behaves nothing like the textbook example. We have dealt with toxic organics, heavy metals, extreme salinity and refractory COD in food processing, chemical manufacturing, electroplating, mining and municipal projects.
Complete System Responsibility
One supplier, one process guarantee. We take the plant from preliminary screening through to membrane separation, evaporation and brine management, with process, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering handled internally.
Spares, Service and Commissioning
Membranes, dosing pumps, diffusers, instrumentation and blowers are stocked for the systems we sell. Our control systems support remote diagnostics, and we can put an engineer on site for commissioning, training or an unplanned shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you work with our existing equipment?
Often yes. We regularly integrate into existing civil structures where the concrete is sound, replacing internals and controls rather than starting over. We will tell you honestly when legacy kit is beyond economic repair.
Can the plant be modified later if our production changes?
Yes, if you tell us about likely expansion up front. Leaving room in the civil works and oversizing the equalisation tank costs far less than retrofitting later. Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery Production Wastewater Treatment rarely fails because of bad chemistry — it usually fails because nobody planned for the second production line.
How do you handle sludge from this process?
Sludge handling is where most budgets quietly blow out. We size dewatering against realistic solids production, and we usually recommend a filter press for this duty. The disposal route — landfill, incineration, or a licensed contractor — should be confirmed before commissioning.
Do you handle installation and operator training?
Every unit we supply is commissioned by our own engineers. Training happens on site with your actual operators, and the O&M manual covers routine work plus troubleshooting. Remote diagnostics through the control system are included for the first year.
